“THE PUDDLE” EARPIECE

Design and render the 3D model of a piece of jewelry of choice, taking inspiration from nature or biology.

Timeline: 4 weeks, 30+ hours

Role: Product Designer

Term: Fall 2022

Software: Rhino 3D, Keyshot, Photoshop, Procreate

Tools: SLA Resin 3D Printer

INTRODUCTION

The project aimed to create a unique and aesthetically pleasing piece of jewelry that would incorporate design elements inspired by the natural world. The design process would involve researching various aspects of biology and nature, such as plant and animal forms, patterns, and textures. The goal would be to find inspiration in the natural world's complexity and beauty and translate that into a wearable art piece using Rhino 3D. The piece would then be 3D printed using a resin printer.

In order to create a piece of jewelry that is both visually stunning and structurally sound, I would have needed to have a good understanding of materials and manufacturing processes. This would involve considering factors such as the durability of materials, the weight and balance of the piece, and the methods by which it would be manufactured.

SKETCHES

I started sketching earrings inspired by oyster shells and water patterns. I wanted to incorporate the texture of the shell into the design while also keeping the earrings lightweight and wearable.

3D MODEL

I imported the earring sketch into Rhino 3D and set it up on a horizontal plane. Using the subD and Sweep 2 as my main tools, I designed the body and the geometric stones of the desired earring design.

DIMENSIONS

Sizes are in inches.

RESIN PRINTED MODEL

The resin-printed 3D model has the correct proportions and sits nicely on the ear. Having the ability to rotate this earring to your liking is a distinctive feature to take advantage of.
